A Free Battle Royale Mode Just Launched On The Last Game You’d Expect And It Looks Insane

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: you’re dropped onto a large patch of land with no weapons or resources, some unstoppable circle of of instant death is slowly creeping toward you, and you have to survive against a flood of enemies intent on taking you out. Yep, it’s a Battle Royale! And now it’s coming to the last game you’d expect: Civilization VI. Thought you’d seen it all with Tetris 99? Firaxis would like you to hold its beer.

Civilization VI

Yep, a new custom multiplayer game mode called “Red Death” is shipping with September’s free update to Civ 6 and it looks absolutely bonkers. And nope, you don’t need to own any of the expansions to enjoy it.

It’s not just the gameplay that flips the script on the typically serious turn-based strategy game. Firaxis has injected their twist on Battle Royale with some quirky humor, especially when it comes to the new factions. “Horribly Scarred Mutants”,”Very Goth Borderlords” and “Deeply Invested Cultists” will be fighting you tooth and nail for resources in a bid to escape the doomed planet before the Red Death consumes it. (Or as Firaxis likes to call it, “Leaving the party early.”)

Here’s the trailer. It’s borderline cringe-worthy but perfectly matches the manic mood of this new mode. The developers are fully aware this an over-the-top way of experiencing Civ.

There’s a bunch of tweaks to the gameplay you’re used to. Any body of water is now corrosive and will damage you each turn that you cross it. Clearing Raider camps now grants you some crazy perks in the form of a helicopter gunship or a nuclear warhead (which any unit can deploy). Oh, and Raiders don’t take any damage from the Red Death, so watch out. . .

It’s really a testament to the staying power of Civilization VI that the developers are introducing a new game mode nearly 3 years after the game’s launch. And you know what? The strategy might work. Now I’m tempted to blow the dust of this game’s virtual box and fire it up in Steam to check out this mayhem.

The September update also introduces a ton of other improvements and fixes. You can read up on it right here.
